“BESSt 2.0” is the iPhone version of “BESSt 2.0 IOL Power Calculator”. A must-have tool for Anterior Segment surgeons who need to perform cataract surgery after Laser Refractive Surgery. Note: it requires the Oculus™ Pentacam™.

2. The latest version of BESSt formula allows more accurate estimation of IOL Power in eyes which underwent Laser Refractive Surgery for either Myopia or Hypermetropia. BESSt 2.0 only requires Pentacam™ measurements, without ANY need of pre-refractive surgery information.
   

BESSt 2.0 WARNING:  Spherical Aberration

We have recently discovered that different Pentacam units display the value of the Anterior Surface Spherical Aberration in different ways (either as an index expressed in e-3 or in microns), depending on whether an engineer has made a special calibration in situ or not). We are working out a conversion factor so that either value can be entered in the future, but for the time being, as the differences can be significant we recommend all BESSt 2.0 formula users (both Myopic and Hyperopic algorithm) to enter 0 (zero) in the Sph Aberr field in order to avoid possible errors in the calculation. When in doubt about the calculated IOL power please compare the results with the old algorithm (BESSt 1.0) and with different formulas if available. Please check this site again in a few weeks for possible updates.

The original formula (as published on the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in 2006) is also included in the program and it is intended to be used only if your Pentacam™ unit does not support Zernike Wavefront Analysis (which is needed for BESSt 2.0). I can also be used in the rare event that you have no idea whether the eye that you are going to operate had a myopic or hypermetropic ablation.
